It's weird watching television from the 70s
And I'm not talking about the hair and clothing. (I actually think, for 70s sci-fi, Buck Rogers has aged rather well.) I'm talking about...
1) The women look like they might occasionally eat actual food. I have yet to see a single one whose head looks like a lolly on a stick. And it saddens me that I have to remind myself that no, these women are not fat, modern media has warped my perceptions.
2) Both men and women actually look old enough to have the jobs they have, as opposed to being anime-aged.
3) There are enough women. Not enough for any kind of gender parity, and certainly not as major as I'd like, nor developed as I'd like (WTF Wilma and your "Buck I will prove to you I am a WOMAN!" speech at the end of the pilot, OMG childhood girlcrush SHATTERED), but enough for slashing, which is a low bar plenty of shows aren't reaching still.

The first sneak peek at the show is here, and I think you'll find two of the three cast members very familiar... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YY0-lSg3-k

But this is also true of watching films from anytime prior to the 90s. You see a greater variety of appearances for both men and women, and women actually looked normal.
