dragovianknight: From the start of the Pandaria quest chain. (WoW - Varian Angry)

Not because I think anyone cares, but because I'm tired of not being able to find my own damn posts on that site.

Every so often, I wonder where the meme of Anduin Wrynn as a weak, cowardly pacifist comes from.

At thirteen, he straight up tells his father, Varian “I have anger management issues” Wrynn, that instead of becoming a warrior he’s going to go to another continent and study to become a priest with Velen. To his face. "This is what's happening. I am leaving. Bye."

In Cataclysm* he was all, “Hey, hero, something weird is going on; let’s go down to the docks and intimidate people for information.” And when you’re attacked by Twilight Cultists, his reaction is, “Here’s a shield and some heals; get with the killing.” After which he has the sense to get out from underfoot so you can murderhobo freely.

Then in Pandaria, he crosses an unfamiliar continent that can literally manifest your fear into monsters, talks the local gods into opening up their sacred Vale to refugees and outsiders, and then goes off to challenge Garrosh Hellscream, nearly getting killed in the process.

I mean, I get that a lot of the WoW fanbase is all about the mindless warmongering? But still, I don’t understand the rampant Anduin hate, when the closest I’ve seen him come to pacifism is “Maybe we should get all the information instead of going off half-cocked into combat.” Which, frankly, is the sort of attitude that might have kept the High King and Warchief from getting their asses handed to them at the Broken Shore, I’m just saying.

*A quest chain I will forever mourn the loss of, because how do you not enjoy roughing up people while the Crown Prince of Stormwind practically takes notes on your intimidation techniques?

I thought for a minute you were talking about Wynn from Star Trek: Deep Space 9, who OK is a very three-dimensional villain, but I'd find it hard to come up with an outright defense of her.

Because he is not a classic hyper-masculine power fantasy? And not being hyper-masculine = not!masculine = feminine = BAD. Therefore, they will read every negative trait they associate with feminine people into everything about him regardless of whether or not it makes any fuckin' sense whatsoever or has anything to do with any Anduin has ever done.

As for me, I mean... as Horde, I really quite liked what I saw of him in Pandaria! He seemed pretty level-headed, really fucking good at diplomacy, and generally the sort of everything you really want in a leader. Also, fuck Garrosh Hellscream in the ear yes I am all for you confronting the motherfucker, squishy human; I only hadn't tried knifing the fucker because game mechanics made it impossible.

(I mean, I justified it in character as being that I figured that assassinating him seemed unlikely to actually fix all the problems and probably would end up with me also perma-dead, and therefore had instead been quietly seething and undermining all of his horrific bullshit as much as possible and also plotting his death. But honestly, I probably would've tried knifing the fucker if I actually could've. ...my hatred of Garrosh is epic, okay, and dates back to Cataclysm.)

If I remember right don't have of the dipshits on the forums keep harping back to Anduin running away back in - what, Vanilla? When Fordring was holding down the throne room, and Anduin legit had the knee high child character model. And the idiots keep holding THAT up as a reason he's "weak", because the Very Politically Important CHILD does the sensible thing when violence breaks out and lets the adults handle it.

(This is, I will also note, directly contradicted by the comics which have better characterization of everyone then we get in game, where baby!Anduin's response to "violence had broken out in the throne room" was to grab a bow and sword and run TOWARDS the danger, chew his split in half and arguing with himself father out in the middle of the battle to get his shit together, try to shoot an adult black dragon in the eye, and then beat black dragon welps - those fuckers who overran us as two hunters and serially killed us for an hour in the wetlands that one time - to death with a ROCK until Varian and co. arrived to rescue him. I just want to shove those comic issues down the Anduin haters' throats, I swear.)
