Apparently the artists who take commissions simply do not want my money.

(One artist I contacted, got put on her commission list without any communication from her, and now I'm off said list, also without any communication; the other artist has just fallen off the face of the earth. I get it, universe: no art for me.)

I'm sorry to hear that--I know when I take commissions, I make darn sure to communicate with folks once they're on the list (and especially after they've sent me their deposit), because I've been on the receiving end of artist flakiness.

I don't know the particulars of what you're looking for--are you looking through Deviantart, or somewhere else? IMHO--an artist who asks for a deposit on a commission up front and is willing to work to a (reasonable) deadline is probably likely to be more professional (and more motivated) than a hobby-artist with no deadline ... (again, speaking from personal experience--after all, I know money motivates me! :D) I've never commissioned art, though, so I'm not sure what the best way to find such folks would be ... :/

The one who fell off the face of the earth I found on DevArt. The other is someone who's done commissions for people I know, her art is lovely, I just...can't seem to actually connect with her. On the up side, I've had artists take a deposit and then vanish in the past, so... *hands* I think I may just be cursed.

Ouch--yeah, I've pretty careful, but I got burned on a commission once before too, and I've never forgotten it. :( :( The only recommendation I could give in that case is to maybe pay the deposit through Paypal (or a credit card, if you have one with good protections), and make careful note of the deadline for non-delivery complaints. (I think it's a month...) If the artist can't deliver within a couple of weeks, then you can always make a complaint and have Paypal yank your money back--but if it's an artist with a long waitlist, that won't help you very much, I'm afraid. :(

Sadly, most good artists seem to have a wait list. :( A lot of them don't really seem to want to lay down hard and fast deadlines, either.

Maybe I will just give up on giant robot art and commission you to design me a firebird tatt instead. <3

lol! Well, I'd be more than happy to design you a firebird any time you want one, but I also understand wanting some gorgeous giant robot art from your favorite artists! There's been a few I've been eyeing myself ... so many pretties, so little money! XD

Hey, at least you didn't get sent a rough draft via email, a first sketch and then never heard from the artist again and their email bounces.

There's a reason I've decided that art made for me by anyone other than friends; or done right on the spot at a convention, just won't ever happen.

Okay, getting a rough draft before the person dropped off the face of the world would suck even more. I just really don't understand why people don't want money! I want to give them money!
