I spent last night/today comment ficcing at [personal profile] myopicmirror04, because I made the mistake of writing down a few lines, and those lines spawned a few more, and then... Not really a surprise, given that this is how most of what I write happens.

Just to be clear: I don't know what came before, I don't know what's going on, I don't know if it falls into any of my existing universes, and I don't know if there will be more. What I do know is that if I don't post it and tag it, in six months I'll be going, "OMG, does anyone remember that thing I wrote, I can't find it on my hard drive."

"Angelo."

He looked up at his name, through light which shimmered and wavered like water. That strange quality of the light was surely to blame for the long moments it took him to recognize the face beneath the rain-damp hood, longer still to put a name to it.

"Jessica."

Her expression softened, from disapproval to something more like sorrow, and he wondered just how pathetic he sounded.

"Angelo," she said again, little more than a sigh this time, and her hood fell back as she shook her head. "Is this what you've been doing all this time?"

"Not all I've been doing." He wanted to touch her, make sure she was real, not some trick of the fickle light. "I scout monsters, too."

"I imagine you knock them unconscious just with the fumes," she said, and before he quite realized what she was doing, his drink had been pried from his hands.

"No, I only hunt when I've run out of funds." Well, except for that one time, and he had the scars to remember it by. He frowned at his empty hands. "I was drinking that."

"You've had enough. Enough for several people, from the look of you."

"I'd really only gotten started."

"You're several bottles past started, I'd say." Angelo was about to protest again, but Jessica's hands wrapping around his distracted him. "And since I've need of your help, I'd rather have this conversation when you can remember it."

"Of course. Why would you be here if you didn't need something from me?" he asked, and that sounded pitiful even to his own ears.

Jessica frowned. "If we're going to fight, I'd rather do that when you can remember it, too," she said after a moment. "Which means I need to get you somewhere you can sleep it off."

"I've a room, of sorts." Less a room and more a spot behind some storage barrels where he routinely woke, but he had to assume Morrie didn't mind him being there, since he hadn't been tossed out yet. "Hardly a fit place for a lady, mind."

"Of course not." Jessica moved to go, and Angelo clung to her hands. "I need to speak to Morrie."

"You aren't leaving, are you?" His grip tightened of its own accord. "You said you needed my help."

"I'm going to talk to Morrie," she said, with more patience than he'd ever seen her display, "and then I'm going to see you to a proper bed - which you will sleep in alone - and once you've got at least half the alcohol out of you, we'll talk."

"You aren't leaving," he persisted.

She sighed. "I'm not leaving," she said, the sadness back in her voice as she returned his grip. "Not without you. I promise."

Angelo nodded slowly and let her go. He knew about promises.

They were made to be broken.
