Soul Flame
Feb. 17th, 2022 02:56 amThis was an off-the-cuff description I wrote in someone's comments, but I actually rather like it. Considering how bad I am at the question "what is your book about?", I want to save this for future reference.
Soul Flame is a fantasy adventure with a romance subplot that's less "friends to lovers" and more "gradually stumbling their way toward a clue".
The Rusidei Empire faces two great threats: the ravenous insectoid zhom, and the umbra, a dark force which feasts on both the living and the souls of the dead. To defend against the first, Guardians train in the eight temples, learning to harness the elements for physical combat. Against the second, Speakers study in the eight shrines, gaining the ability to walk in the spirit world and raise the spirits of the Ancestors for battles beyond the mere physical.
When the Jade Shrine falls to an eruption of umbra greater than anyone - even the most ancient Ancestors - has ever witnessed, the remaining shrines and temples must unite to push back the darkness.
...
Oh, and everyone is an anthropomorphic bear, because having fangs and claws is way cooler than being human.
I have been told to edit this post with the Vella link, so here it is: https://www.amazon.com/kindle-vella/story/B09Q1T527J
